What this bill would do

This bill is known as the Protecting Firefighters and Advancing State-of-the-Art Alternatives Act or the PFAS Alternatives Act. It directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services to establish a grant program for researching, developing, and testing next-generation, PFAS-free turnout gear. Eligible entities include certain nonprofit organizations, higher education institutions, and national fire service or safety organizations. The legislation also establishes training programs to provide guidance on safely wearing, decontaminating, and caring for this new turnout gear. Finally, the Secretary must submit a progress report to Congress within two years of the Act's enactment.
