What this bill would do
The Healthy Families Act aims to allow Americans to earn paid sick time to address their own health needs or those of their families. Under this bill, covered employees would earn at least 1 hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked, up to a cap of 56 hours per year. This time can be used for various reasons, including personal illness, caring for family members, or dealing with domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking. The Act includes specific definitions for family members, including domestic partners and various types of children. It also establishes rules for how employees can request time off and how employers must handle employee records and notice requirements. Finally, the bill provides enforcement mechanisms through the Secretary of Labor and through private civil actions.
