What this bill would do

The Paycheck Fairness Act aims to amend the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 to provide more effective remedies for victims of wage discrimination based on sex. It expands the definition of "sex" to include pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics. The bill modifies the "bona fide factor" defense and enhances nonretaliation protections for employees discussing wages. It also establishes enhanced penalties for violators and grants enforcement authority to the EEOC and the Secretary of Labor. Additionally, the legislation provides for negotiation skills training, research on pay disparities, and the collection of compensation data by the EEOC.
