What this bill would do
This bill directs the Attorney General to establish a task force on anti-Sikh hate and discrimination within 180 days of its enactment. The task force is required to draft a specific definition of anti-Sikh hate and discrimination to help the Department of Justice prosecute offenses and collect statistics. It must also develop an educational program to be shared with local and federal law enforcement agencies, schools, and higher education institutions. Additionally, the task force must submit annual and five-year reports to congressional committees detailing hate crimes, legal actions, ongoing threats, and Department of Justice efforts. Finally, the task force is required to translate public resources into Punjabi and meet quarterly with members of the Sikh community and Sikh organizations.

Potential Positive Impacts for People
-
Improved Law Enforcement and School Education: Section 2(b)(2)(B) requires the task force to develop an educational program on Sikhs and identifying anti-Sikh hate and discrimination, which may be shared with local and federal law enforcement agencies, elementary and secondary schools, and higher education institutions. This provision could benefit students and law enforcement personnel by increasing understanding and awareness of the Sikh community.
-
Better Data Collection and Prosecution: Section 2(b)(2)(A) requires the task force to draft a definition of anti-Sikh hate and discrimination to assist the Department of Justice in prosecutorial decision-making and collecting statistics on offenses. This could lead to more accurate tracking and better prosecution of crimes targeting the Sikh community.
-
Community Collaboration and Accessibility: Section 2(b)(4) and Section 2(b)(5) mandate that the task force translate public resources into Punjabi and meet on a quarterly basis to collaborate with members of the Sikh community and Sikh organizations. These actions ensure that the community has direct access to resources in their language and maintains a regular line of communication with the government.
Potential Negative Impacts for People
- No Negative Impacts Identified: Based explicitly on the provided text, there are no specific sections or provisions that outline negative consequences, burdens, or penalties for individuals or groups of people in the United States.
