What this bill would do

This bill, titled the "Honoring our K9 Heroes Act," seeks to amend the Homeland Security Act of 2002. It aims to establish a grant program designed to increase access to medical care for retired Federal working dogs. Under this program, the Secretary would work with eligible entities to cover portions of medical expenses. Eligible entities must be tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations that have at least a two-year history of providing medical assistance to retired Federal law enforcement and military working dogs. The bill also defines retired dogs as those who have received a retirement letter and are in the care of their handler. Finally, it authorizes $1,000,000 in appropriations for each fiscal year from 2026 through 2030.
