What this amendment would do
This amendment aims to add a new section (Section 707) to the bill to ensure Department of Defense firefighters receive medical testing and services to detect and prevent certain cancers at no cost to them.
Key additions include:
-
Cancer Screenings: The Secretary of Defense must provide specific screenings for breast, colon, and prostate cancers based on age, gender, and risk factors, as well as screenings for other cancers identified by the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as being higher risk for firefighters.
-
Service Requirements: The amendment sets specific rules for how often these tests should happen and requires licensed professionals to review and provide the results to the firefighters.
-
Data and Privacy: The Secretary must document test acceptance and results to identify cancer trends. This information can be shared with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but personally identifiable information must be removed first.
-
Flexibility: Firefighters have the option to opt out of these medical services.
