What this amendment would do

Ms. Hirono and several other senators proposed this amendment to keep our government accountable to the people by protecting our hard-earned Social Security benefits.

What It Changes and Adds

  • The amendment adds a deficit-neutral reserve fund specifically for preserving Social Security benefits.

  • It allows the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate to update budget levels and make adjustments for legislation related to preserving these benefits.

  • It specifically mentions that this can include stopping the Social Security Administration from closing regional and field offices or cutting down the staff at those offices.

  • Any legislation for this purpose must not increase the deficit over the total period of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.

A vote on one change, not on the bill. A bill can collect dozens of these, and losing one does not stop it.
