What this bill would do
This bill, known as the "Fit for Purpose Wildfire Readiness Act of 2025," directs the Secretary of Agriculture and the Secretary of the Interior to create a reorganization plan. The goal is to consolidate federal wildland fire preparedness, suppression, and recovery authorities under a new agency. This new agency would be called the "National Wildland Firefighting Service" under the Department of the Interior. The plan must include a budget and a description of the qualifications for a Director. The President would appoint this Director with the advice and consent of the Senate. Finally, the Secretaries must submit a report of their plan to specific Senate and House committees within 180 days.
