What this bill would do
The "LIFT the BAR Act" aims to amend the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 and other laws to provide certain benefits to noncitizens. The bill repeals several existing eligibility restrictions and restores previous provisions regarding SNAP, Medicaid, and CHIP. It expands the definition of access to basic services to include various categories of lawfully present noncitizens, such as those with pending status or DACA. Additionally, the bill updates language throughout various acts to replace terms like "alien" with "noncitizen." These changes are intended to facilitate access to nutrition, health insurance, and housing assistance.
