What this bill would do

This bill creates a new program managed by the Secretary of Transportation to provide grants for public transportation operating support costs. Urbanized areas, States, and Indian Tribes are eligible to receive these grants based on data from the National Transit Database. Grant funds can be used for various projects that improve public transportation service, such as increasing service hours, improving reliability, and enhancing safety. A majority of the grant money must be used for projects that benefit underserved communities or areas of persistent poverty. The legislation authorizes an appropriation of $20,000,000,000 for each of the fiscal years 2025 through 2028.
