What this bill would do
This bill is known as the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians Land Transfer Act of 2025. It revokes a specific public land order from 1964 and transfers certain Federal land in California into trust for the benefit of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians. The Secretary of the Interior is required to place about 80 acres of BLM land and about 185 acres of Indian Creek Ranch land into trust within 180 days of the enactment of the Act. The Secretary must also review the land to see if a survey is needed and make any necessary minor corrections. Once placed into trust, the land becomes part of the tribe's reservation and will be managed according to standard trust property laws. Finally, the bill explicitly prohibits any class II or class III gaming on the land taken into trust.

Potential Positive Impacts for People
-
Section 2(b): This section requires the Secretary to place about 80 acres of BLM land and about 185 acres of Indian Creek Ranch land into trust for the benefit of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians within 180 days. This is a positive outcome for the tribe because it places the land into trust status for their benefit.
-
Section 2(d): This section declares that the land taken into trust will become part of the reservation and will be administered by the Secretary under laws generally applicable to property held in trust for an Indian tribe. This gives the tribe the benefit of having the land officially recognized as part of their reservation.
Potential Negative Impacts for People
- Section 2(e): This section states that the land taken into trust shall not be used for any class II gaming or class III gaming under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. This creates a negative outcome or burden for the tribe by explicitly restricting them from using their new trust land for certain types of gaming activities.
