What this amendment would do

SA 3334, submitted by Mr. Schiff, aims to add a new section to bill S. 2296 titled "Report on Aerial Firefighting Support."

The purpose of this amendment is to require the Secretary of the Air Force to provide an unclassified report to congressional defense committees within 180 days of the Act's enactment. This report must be created in consultation with the Chief of the National Guard Bureau and the Chief of the United States Forest Service.

The report is intended to include:

  • An assessment of the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System (MAFFS) program readiness across active and reserve Air Force components to maximize availability for combating fires, considering the prevalence and increasing intensity, spread, and damage of wildland forest fires.

  • Recommendations for the procurement, maintenance, and basing of aircraft and firefighting systems, as well as the availability of trained personnel, to maximize availability during high wildfire threat periods.

  • An assessment of other available assets, technology, or capabilities within the Air Force or Space Force that could improve the identification or response to wildland forest fires.
