What this amendment would do
SA 2937, submitted by Mr. Schatz and Ms. Hirono, is an amendment to bill S. 2296. Its purpose is to add a new section, SEC. 334, which requires a report on the justification for current and proposed expansions of inert bombing and gunfire training on the island of Kaula, Hawaii.
The amendment aims to add a requirement for the Secretary of the Navy to submit a report to the Senate and House Subcommittees on Defense within 180 days of the Act's enactment.
The report must include:
- A national security justification for the expansion that goes beyond training site availability and unit scheduling.
- The tangible impacts on readiness for units in the United States Indo-Pacific Command area if Kaula is unavailable.
- An assessment of whether the need for Kaula is irreplaceable or if alternative sites or training methods exist.
- A consideration of specific funding for environmental remediation, which includes future and existing ordnance clean up.
- 7/17/2025
- 1 Cosponsor added.
