What this amendment would do

SA 2903, submitted by Mr. Schatz, aims to add a section to bill S. 2296 regarding Department of Defense compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).

The amendment seeks to change or add the following:

  • Clarification: It states that cultural items relating to an Indian Boarding School found, buried, or located on Department of Defense property are subject to NAGPRA.

  • Funding: It authorizes $2,000,000 to be appropriated to the Secretary of Defense to help claimants carry out their responsibilities under NAGPRA, with the funds remaining available until they are spent.
