What this amendment would do

As an expert legislative analyst, I want to break down what this amendment actually does for us. Amendment SA 2791, submitted by Ms. Cantwell alongside her colleagues, aims to strike section 40005 of the bill and replace it with a new section focused entirely on funding NASA programs, missions, and facilities.

The purpose of this change is to provide a total of $9,995,000,000 in special appropriations for fiscal year 2025, which will remain available until September 30, 2032. Holding our officials accountable means knowing where this money is going, so here are the main areas the amendment targets:

  • $500,000,000 for the Mars Sample Return Mission.
  • $2,100,000,000 for the Gateway program.
  • $4,100,000,000 for the Space Launch System for Artemis Missions IV and V.
  • $20,000,000 for the Orion multi-purpose crew vehicle.
  • $1,250,000,000 for the International Space Station.
  • $325,000,000 to fulfill a specific NASA contract issued on June 26, 2024.
  • $210,000,000 for the Earth Science Division.
  • $289,500,000 for the Planetary Science Division.
  • $106,500,000 for the Astrophysics Division.
  • $7,000,000 for the Heliophysics Division.
  • $27,700,000 for the Space Technology Mission Directorate.
  • $65,000,000 for the Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate.
  • $950,000,000 for infrastructure projects and improvements across all 10 NASA field centers and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
