What this amendment would do
Mr. Schatz, along with several other officials, put forward amendment SA 2580. If we want to hold our elected officials accountable, we need to know what they are trying to change. This amendment aims to add a specific exemption to a bill.
The Purpose of the Change
The purpose of this addition is to protect rural and low-income communities. Specifically, it states that duties put in place under a certain national emergency declaration (Executive Order 14257) will not apply to certain goods.
- The exemption applies if the goods are estimated to cause an increase in the Consumer Price Index that goes over a projected annual inflation rate of 2 percent.
- This inflation rate must be published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics specifically for rural and low-income communities.
