What this amendment would do
Mr. Schatz submitted amendment SA 2576 to hold things accountable and look out for everyday families by making sure certain essential goods are protected from extra taxes. The purpose of this amendment is to create an exemption for baby items from any duties or taxes put in place because of the national emergency declared in Executive Order 14257.
What It Aims to Change or Add
The amendment adds a new section to the bill that specifically blocks these emergency import duties from applying to baby items.
According to the text, a baby item includes:
- Items found in the infants' and toddlers' apparel and baby food and formula expenditure categories from the Bureau of Labor Statistics
- Accessories or equipment needed to store breast milk, baby formula, or baby food
- Durable infant or toddler products as defined in the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008
