What this amendment would do
Mr. Schatz submitted amendment SA 2574 to hold the line on grocery costs for hardworking Americans. Common sense tells us that when we put taxes or duties on imported goods, families end up paying more at the checkout counter.
The Purpose of the Amendment
The purpose of this amendment is to protect families from excessive price hikes on what we eat and drink. Specifically, it stops certain duties from being slapped on food items if those taxes would drive up the final sale price higher than a normal 2 percent yearly inflation rate.
What It Aims to Change
- It adds an exemption for certain food items from duties tied to the national emergency declared in Executive Order 14257.
- It applies this protection to food items defined under the ``foods, feeds, and beverages'' category in the International Trade Application Programming Interface of the Bureau of the Census.
