What this amendment would do
As folks who want to keep our elected officials accountable, let's look at what this amendment actually does with the public's money. Submitted by Mr. Warner along with several other members, this amendment sets aside specific funds for aviation safety and memorial purposes.
The amendment aims to change the bill by adding a new section that appropriates $63,000,000 for fiscal year 2025 to the Secretary of Transportation. This money is meant to stay available until September 30, 2029, and is funded out of money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated.
To pay for this new funding, the amendment also changes another part of the law to reduce funding for AI by lowering a $500,000,000 figure down to $437,000,000.
The money directed to the Secretary of Transportation is meant for specific purposes:
- To carry out safety measures and recommendations directed by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Secretary from the mid-air collision between American Airlines Flight 5342 and United States Army Aviation Brigade Priority Air Transport 25 on January 29, 2025.
- To establish and maintain a permanent memorial for the victims of that same collision.
- To undertake projects directly related to the safety and security of airports under the jurisdiction of the Airports Authority, prioritizing safety improvements for current flight services at Ronald Reagan Washington Airport, including specific non-stop routes listed in the text.
