What this amendment would do
As folks keeping an eye on how our government spends money, we need to know what our elected officials are trying to put into our laws. Amendment SA 1576 was submitted by Ms. Cortez Masto for the congressional budget for fiscal year 2025 and the appropriate budgetary levels for fiscal years 2026 through 2034.
The purpose of this amendment is to create a new rule in the Senate. It aims to add a point of order against funding immigration enforcement measures that negatively impact the United States travel and tourism industry.
Here is what the amendment actually sets up:
- It makes it out of order in the Senate to consider any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, amendment between the Houses, or conference report that funds immigration enforcement measures negatively impacting our travel and tourism industry.
- It sets a rule that this restriction can only be waived or suspended in the Senate by an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Members, duly chosen and sworn.
- It also requires an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Members of the Senate, duly chosen and sworn, to sustain an appeal of the ruling of the Chair on a point of order raised under this rule.
