What this amendment would do
As your legislative analyst, let us look at what Senator Cortez Masto is trying to do here. This amendment, labeled SA 1569, creates a new rule in the Senate to hold our officials accountable and protect our communities.
-
Main Goal: It creates a point of order in the Senate against any legislation that limits Federal law enforcement from doing their core job of investigating drug trafficking and human trafficking just to help with immigration enforcement.
-
Protecting the Rule: To bypass this protective rule and allow a vote on a bill that restricts these crucial investigations, it would take a three-fifths vote of the Senators chosen and sworn. It would also take that same three-fifths vote to overturn a ruling by the Chair on this matter.
