What this amendment would do
This amendment, numbered SA 1566 and submitted by Ms. Cortez Masto, is designed to protect the United States tourism industry and keep tourist visas moving. As folks who care about how our government works, we need to make sure our elected officials are held accountable when laws might hurt our economy.
What It Changes and Adds
The amendment adds a new rule to the budget resolution. Here is what it aims to do:
- Creates a roadblock against any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, or conference report that slows down the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services from processing tourist visas in a timely manner.
- Protects the tourism industry by stopping legislation that would harm it through delayed visa processing.
- Sets a high bar to bypass this new rule, requiring a three-fifths vote of the chosen and sworn Senators to either waive it or to sustain an appeal of the Chair's ruling.
