What this amendment would do
As folks looking out for the everyday people, we need to keep a close eye on how our elected officials handle our hard-earned money and taxes. Senator Cortez Masto, along with several of her colleagues, put forward amendment SA 1562 to the concurrent resolution on the congressional budget for fiscal year 2025.
Purpose and Changes
-
The amendment aims to add a point of order in the Senate against a specific type of tax and spending maneuver.
-
It stops the Senate from considering legislation that would increase the rate of duty on food, energy, or pharmaceutical goods brought into the United States from an ally country, if that money is used to decrease taxes on the wealthy.
-
To get around this rule and allow such legislation anyway, it would take a three-fifths affirmative vote of the Senators chosen and sworn.
