What this amendment would do
This amendment, labeled SA 1542, was put forward by Ms. Warren along with a few of her colleagues. If we want to hold our officials accountable, it is important to look at what tools they are setting up for the budget.
What the Amendment Does
-
The amendment sets up a deficit-neutral reserve fund related to expanding and protecting Social Security.
-
It allows the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate to change budget allocations for legislation that relates to two specific goals.
-
The first goal is the sustainable expansion of benefits under the Social Security program.
-
The second goal is promoting the complete long-term actuarial solvency of the Federal Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund and the Federal Disability Insurance Trust Fund.
-
These changes can only happen if the legislation does not increase the deficit over the total periods of fiscal years 2025 through 2029 or fiscal years 2025 through 2034.
