What this amendment would do
Look, folks, as someone who looks out for everyday Americans and wants to keep our elected officials accountable, I want to break down what Senator Padilla's amendment, SA 1458, actually does.
The Purpose of the Amendment
The main goal here is to demand transparency before Congress votes on certain major budget bills, known as reconciliation legislation. We the people deserve to know if the choices our officials make are going to drive up the cost of living.
What It Aims to Change or Add
- Truth in Spending: The amendment adds a new rule—called a point of order—in the Senate.
- The Inflation Test: Under this new rule, the Senate cannot consider certain budget bills or related amendments unless the Congressional Budget Office has officially determined and publicly shared what kind of effect that measure will have on inflation.
- Overriding the Rule: Senators can choose to ignore this rule, but it would take a solid three-fifths vote of the members to do so, or to override a ruling by the Chair.
