What this amendment would do

As folks working for you here in Congress, it is our job to make sure we keep a close eye on how things are run and hold our elected officials accountable. Mr. Padilla submitted amendment numbered SA 1457, which was ordered to lie on the table for the concurrent resolution H. Con. Res. 14.

Purpose and Changes

  • This amendment creates a new point of order in the Senate against specific reconciliation legislation.
  • It aims to stop the Senate from considering certain bills, joint resolutions, amendments, or conference reports unless the Congressional Budget Office has determined and made publicly available the effect the measure would have on inflation.
  • To bypass this rule and waive or suspend it, the Senate would need an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the sworn members.
  • Sustaining an appeal of the ruling of the Chair on this point of order also requires an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the sworn members.
