What this amendment would do
Mr. Heinrich and his colleagues introduced SA 1453 to keep public lands in public hands. If we want to hold our officials accountable, we need to know what they are trying to do with our shared national assets.
-
This amendment creates a point of order in the Senate against any legislation that tries to sell off public land just to cut the Federal deficit.
-
It aims to stop the government from balancing the books by auctioning off our public lands.
How It Can Be Overridden
-
The text states that this rule can only be waived or suspended if three-fifths of the sworn Senators vote in favor of doing so.
-
It also takes that same three-fifths majority vote to sustain an appeal against the Chair's ruling on this point of order.
