What this amendment would do
As folks keeping an eye out for the everyday people, we need to know what our elected officials are trying to do with our laws. This amendment, submitted by Ms. Hirono and Mr. Peters, is all about protecting our school meal programs.
What It Changes and Adds
The purpose of this amendment is to create a point of order in the Senate against legislation that would reduce Federal funding or participation in school meal programs. This applies to programs authorized by the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act or the Child Nutrition Act of 1966.
To get around this rule, the amendment states that it can only be waived or suspended in the Senate by an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Members, duly chosen and sworn. That same three-fifths vote is also required to sustain an appeal of the ruling of the Chair on a point of order raised under this rule.
