What this bill would do
This bill, titled the "Protecting Investors' Personally Identifiable Information Act," aims to stop the Securities and Exchange Commission from requiring the collection of personally identifiable information under consolidated audit trail reporting requirements. It defines personally identifiable information as details that can trace an individual's identity, such as names, Social Security numbers, or email addresses. Under this act, the Commission is prohibited from requiring exchanges or members to provide this information for certain reporting requirements. An exception is made if the Commission specifically requests the information for an investigation into Federal securities law violations or related enforcement actions. If such a request is made, the information must be provided within 24 hours unless an extension is granted. Finally, the Commission must destroy any provided information within one day after the investigation or matter concludes.
