What this bill would do
This bill provides for the equitable settlement of certain Indian land disputes regarding land in Illinois. It gives the United States Court of Federal Claims the jurisdiction to hear, determine, and render judgment on a land claim of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma under the Treaty of Grouseland. This jurisdiction is granted without regard to the statute of limitations or any delay-based defense. The jurisdiction expires one year after the enactment of the Act unless the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma files a land claim within that time. Additionally, except for a claim filed under this specific jurisdiction, all other current and future claims of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, its members, descendants, or predecessors to land in Illinois are extinguished.

Potential Positive Impacts for People
- Access to Court for the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma: Under Section 1(a)(1), the United States Court of Federal Claims is given jurisdiction to hear and render judgment on a land claim of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma under the Treaty of Grouseland without regard to the statute of limitations or delay-based defenses, which gives the Tribe a fair chance to present their land claim.
Potential Negative Impacts for People
- Extinguishment of Land Claims: Under Section 1(b), except for a claim filed under subsection (a)(1), all other claims, including any and all future claims, of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma or its members, descendants, and predecessors in interest to land in the State of Illinois are extinguished, which permanently blocks them from bringing any other land claims in that state.
