What this bill would do

The "Immigrant Veterans Eligibility Tracking System Act" or "I-VETS Act" requires the Secretary of Homeland Security to identify aliens who are or were members of the U.S. Armed Forces. This check happens when an alien applies for an immigration benefit or is placed in an immigration enforcement proceeding. The Secretary must then annotate the alien's records to reflect their military service. This process is designed to track outcomes for these individuals. The bill also prohibits using this specific military service information to remove an alien from the United States.

  • Would veterans be better off under this, taking everything together?+8

Directly benefits veterans who are aliens by ensuring their service is recognized and protecting them from removal based on this data.

  • Would immigrants be better off under this?+6

Provides protections and tracking for a specific subset of immigrants who have served in the U.S. military.

  • Does this make it easier for immigrants already here to become citizens?+5

By tracking military service and prohibiting the use of that data for removal, it provides an administrative layer of protection and recognition for immigrant veterans.
