What this bill would do
This bill, known as the "DRIVER Act," requires motor vehicle manufacturers to give owners secure, real-time access to their vehicle's data. Owners must be able to use or authorize third-party access to this data for any lawful purpose without extra fees or licenses. The Act mandates that data can be accessed through interface ports or wireless transmission and includes provisions for deleting stored user data. Additionally, manufacturers and fleet owners must provide clear opt-out opportunities before selling covered data. The bill also prohibits the sale of motor vehicle data to specific foreign nations. Finally, it grants the Federal Trade Commission the power to enforce these requirements.
