What this bill would do
This bill is known as the Guaranteeing Retention and Aid During Shutdowns Act, or the GRAD Act. It amends the Higher Education Act of 1965 to protect college students who rely on federal financial aid. Under this bill, colleges and universities that take part in federal student aid programs must agree to specific rules. Specifically, schools cannot kick out a student or change their enrollment status if their federal student aid is disrupted. This protection applies only when the aid disruption is caused by a lapse in government appropriations.
