What this bill would do
This bill requires hazard pay for certain firefighters who carry out prescribed burns and for smokejumper firefighters who make parachute jumps. Congress states that prescribed fires are an important part of land management and that firefighters taking part in them face risks, smoke exposure, and hard work comparable to wildfire suppression. The bill amends section 5545 of title 5, United States Code, to add these duties as unusual physical hardships or hazards. The pay differential for these duties will equal the pay for fighting forest and range fires on the fireline. The Director of the Office of Personnel Management must issue implementing regulations within 90 days of the bill's enactment.

Potential Positive Impacts for People
-
Fair Compensation for Prescribed Burn Duties: Under Section 2, duties involving the ignition, control, or suppression of a prescribed burn will qualify for hazard pay equal to the pay differential for fighting forest and range fires on the fireline. This is positive because it fairly compensates firefighters for the risks, smoke exposure, and arduous tasks they take on.
-
Fair Compensation for Smokejumpers: Under Section 2, duties involving parachute jumps from flying aircraft by smokejumper firefighters for training, proficiency, or operational purposes will qualify for hazard pay. This is positive because jumping from airplanes is a hazardous duty that should receive hazard pay.
