What this bill would do

This act, known as the "No New Burma Funds Act," aims to maintain a pause on financial activities with the Government of Burma. It directs the Secretary of the Treasury to instruct the United States Executive Director at the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development to continue a pause on disbursements and new financing commitments. This pause was originally started after a military coup overthrew the democratically elected Government of Burma in 2021. The direction stands unless the Secretary of the Treasury determines that maintaining the pause is not in the national interest.

The opposite

  • Does this send more money or help to other countries?-5

The bill restricts financial aid and disbursements to the Government of Burma.

  • Would households on low incomes be better off under this?-2

Limiting international aid can have trickle-down negative effects on developing nations' economies.

What Congress actually voted on

One recorded vote has been taken on this bill.

  • The House: a fast-track vote, needing two-thirds to passPassed 385–0

The House sets aside its normal procedure to move quickly: no amendments, little debate, and a two-thirds bar instead of a simple majority. It is used for measures expected to be uncontroversial, so a bill that fails here failed despite broad expectations that it would not.
