What this bill would do
This bill is known as the Establishing Accreditation Grants for Law Enforcement Act of 2025 or the EAGLE Act of 2025. It directs the Attorney General to set up a grant program within 90 days of enactment. The program is meant to provide for the qualified accreditation and re-certification of local law enforcement agencies. Local law enforcement agencies with less than 350 employees that show financial need can apply for these grants. The money can be used for accreditation fees, on-site assessment charges, and extension fees. The bill authorizes an appropriation of $10,000,000 for fiscal year 2025 to carry out the program.

Potential Positive Impacts for People
-
Financial Help for Local Agencies: Under Section 2(d)(1), local law enforcement agencies can demonstrate their financial need to receive grant funding, which helps them afford accreditation without straining local budgets.
-
Support for Accreditation Costs: Section 2(d)(2) allows agencies to use the grant money specifically for accreditation or re-certification fees, on-site assessment charges, and extension fees, which covers the direct costs of getting officially accredited.
Potential Negative Impacts for People
-
Spending Taxpayer Money: Section 2(f) authorizes $10,000,000 to be appropriated for fiscal year 2025 to fund the program, which uses federal taxpayer funds.
-
Limited Eligibility for Larger Agencies: Section 2(h)(2) restricts the program to local law enforcement agencies that have less than 350 employees, meaning agencies with 350 or more employees cannot receive these grants.
