What this bill would do
This bill is known as the South Asian Heart Health Awareness and Research Act of 2026. It allows the Secretary of Health and Human Services, through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to award supplemental grant funds to States that already receive Federal funding for heart health activities. These funds are meant to promote awareness of heart disease and its connection to type 2 diabetes in heavily affected communities, like the South Asian population in the United States. States must use these grants to create culturally appropriate health materials, support community organizations, hold research conferences, and conduct research on cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The Secretary must report to Congress on these activities within two years of the Act's enactment. The bill authorizes $2,000,000 to be appropriated for each fiscal year from 2026 through 2030 to carry out this section.

Who it would affect, and how
Potential Positive Impacts for People
-
Section 2(a) and Section 2(b)(1) provide supplemental grant funds to States to develop culturally appropriate materials on evidence-based heart health topics like nutrition education, optimal diet plans, and regular exercise programs for communities disproportionately affected by heart disease, such as the South Asian population. This is a positive step because it tailors health promotion directly to the cultural needs of at-risk populations.
-
Section 2(b)(2) uses grant funds to support heart health promotion activities of community organizations that work with or serve disproportionately affected communities like South Asian communities. This helps grass-roots organizations get the backing they need to reach the people they serve.
-
Section 2(b)(3) and Section 2(b)(4) support conferences and workshops to include more members of disproportionately affected communities in heart disease research, and support research regarding cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes among at-risk populations. This ensures that the people most affected are included in medical research and solutions.
-
Section 2(c) requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services to submit a report to specific Congressional committees on supported activities and heart disease data within two years. This holds officials accountable by requiring them to report back to Congress on how the money and programs are working.
Potential Negative Impacts for People
- Section 2(d) authorizes the appropriation of $2,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2026 through 2030 to carry out these activities. This could be viewed as a negative burden because it spends taxpayer money on these specific grants.
