What this amendment would do
This amendment was submitted by Mr. Tuberville, along with Mr. Scott of South Carolina, to be proposed for the bill S. 4668. The purpose of the bill is to protect the name, image, and likeness rights of student athletes, provide protections for them, and promote fair competition among intercollegiate athletics.
What the Amendment Changes or Adds
-
The amendment adds a new rule regarding who can play college sports.
-
It states that a student athlete will be considered a professional athlete and will not be eligible for intercollegiate sports under a specific condition.
-
That condition is if the student athlete receives compensation, direct or indirect financial consideration, per diem, stipends, or reimbursement from a professional sports team, league, or franchise.
-
This rule applies when the money is received in connection with participating in any evaluation, workout, draft combine, or training camp.
-
An exception is made if the money received is only for reasonable, actual, and documented travel expenses.
