What this amendment would do
SA 6759, submitted by Mr. Kennedy, aims to add a section to the bill regarding the addition of suicide prevention contact information to school identification cards.
The amendment seeks to change the Higher Education Act of 1965 to require institutions that provide student identification cards to include the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline phone contact information.
-
Physical and Digital Cards: Institutions creating physical or digital ID cards must include the 988 lifeline. They may also include numbers for the Crisis Text Line, other qualified nonprofit organizations dedicated to suicide prevention, or campus/local mental health programs.
-
Institutions Without IDs: Schools that do not provide ID cards must publish the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline information on their website.
-
Implementation: This would take effect 2 years after the Act is enacted. Institutions are not required to reissue cards that were already issued before the effective date.
