What this amendment would do
Ms. Slotkin put forward an amendment, known as SA 667, which deals with the congressional budget for fiscal year 2025 and the years leading up to 2034. As folks who elect our officials, we need to know what our government is doing with our money and our land.
What The Amendment Aims To Do
This amendment sets up a deficit-neutral reserve fund. In plain English, it gives the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Budget the power to change budget numbers and adjust the ledger for legislation that deals with American oversight of farmland.
Specifically, the changes can support:
- Prohibiting reductions in funding for programs and administrative activities related to enforcing the Agricultural Foreign Investment Disclosure Act.
- Ensuring robust oversight of foreign acquisitions of United States farmland, particularly by entities affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party or other foreign adversaries.
The catch—and a good common sense rule for keeping officials accountable—is that any legislation using this fund cannot increase the deficit over the total period of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.
