What this amendment would do
SA 6661, submitted by Mr. Schatz, aims to add a new section (SEC. 1270A) to title XII of bill S. 4784. The purpose is to require the Secretary of State to provide reports on the international media engagement strategy of the People's Republic of China.
The amendment adds the following requirements:
-
The Secretary of State must submit a report to the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs within one year of the Act's enactment, and annually for the next two years.
-
The report must describe developments in China's international media engagement strategy, specifically including support programs and training for journalists.
-
The report must include an overview of assistance provided to foreign media organizations, training programs, study tours, and exchanges, including the regions of focus and the PRC-controlled entities involved.
-
The report must assess any shifts in China's strategy and how those engagements impact foreign press coverage.
-
The report must describe media engagement or assistance activities from the United States, its allies, or multilateral organizations in those same regions of focus.
-
Reports must be unclassified but are allowed to have a classified annex.
