What this amendment would do
SA 6660, submitted by Mr. Schatz, aims to add a new section (SEC. 1252) to bill S. 4784. The purpose of this addition is to require a report on the benefits of fact-based journalism in the Indo-Pacific region.
The amendment requires the Secretary of State, consulting with the Secretary of Defense, to provide a report to Congress within 180 days of the Act's enactment. This report must outline how editorially independent, fact-based journalism in the Indo-Pacific region, including the Pacific Islands, benefits U.S. security objectives, defense, and foreign policy.
Specifically, the report must assess:
-
The benefits of an information environment that provides fact-based reporting on the malign activities of adversaries and competitors in the region.
-
The risks to U.S. activities and operations caused by a lack of sufficient editorially independent news media in the region.
The report must be unclassified, although it is allowed to have a classified annex.
