What this amendment would do

SA 6384, submitted by Ms. Cortez Masto, aims to add a new section (SEC. 1094) to bill S. 4784. The purpose of this amendment is to designate the Southern Paiute Wilderness in Nevada.

The amendment seeks to add the following to the bill:

  • Land Designation: It designates approximately 736,188 acres of Federal land in Clark and Lincoln Counties, Nevada, as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System.
  • Management and Restrictions:
    • The area will be managed by the Secretary of the Interior.
    • It withdraws the land from mining, mineral leasing, geothermal leasing, and other public land appropriations.
    • It restricts the development of new water resource facilities, though it allows for wildlife guzzlers.
  • Allowances and Permissions:
    • It allows for the control of fire, insects, and diseases.
    • It permits the installation of certain data collection devices for flood warning and reservoir operations.
    • It does not restrict military overflights, flight testing, or the creation of special use airspace.
    • It maintains the State's jurisdiction over fish and wildlife management.
  • Public Access: It specifically ensures that the area known as "Corn Creek / Alamo Road" remains open for public access.
