What this amendment would do
SA 6264, submitted by Mr. Schatz, aims to add a new section (SEC. 1252) to bill S. 4784. The purpose of this amendment is to require a report on the benefits of fact-based journalism in the Indo-Pacific region.
The amendment changes the bill by requiring the Secretary of Defense, in consultation with the Secretary of State, to provide a report to Congress within 180 days of the Act's enactment.
-
The report must outline how editorially independent, fact-based journalism in the Indo-Pacific region, including the Pacific Islands, benefits United States defense and security objectives.
-
The report must assess the benefits of an information environment that includes fact-based reporting on the malign activities of adversaries and competitors in that region.
-
The report must assess the risks to Department of Defense operations and activities caused by insufficient editorially independent news media in the region.
-
The report will be submitted in unclassified form, though it may include a classified annex.
