What this amendment would do
SA 6259, submitted by Mr. Schatz, aims to add a new section to bill S. 4784. The purpose of this addition is to require the Secretary of State to provide an annual report on the international media engagement strategy of the People's Republic of China.
The amendment adds the following requirements:
-
The Secretary of State must submit the report to the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
-
The report must describe developments in China's strategy, specifically including support programs and training for journalists.
-
The report must provide an overview of assistance to foreign media organizations, study tours, and exchanges, including the regions of focus and the PRC-controlled entities involved.
-
The report must assess shifts in China's strategy and how those engagements impact foreign press coverage.
-
The report must describe media engagement activities or assistance provided by the United States, its allies, or multilateral organizations in the same regions of focus.
-
Reports must be submitted in unclassified form, though they may include a classified annex.
