What this amendment would do
This amendment, submitted by Mr. Peters and Ms. Slotkin, aims to add a section to bill S. 4784 to settle land claims for the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.
The purpose of this addition is to:
- Provide Compensation: It authorizes the appropriation of $33,900,000 to be paid to the Community for the uncompensated taking of "Reservation Swamp Lands" and "Reservation Canal Lands" by the Federal Government.
- Clear Land Titles: It confirms ownership for current non-Indian landowners who acquired the land in good faith and removes any "clouds on title."
- End Legal Claims: It extinguishes all claims by the Community to these specific lands and removes any potential claims against the United States, the State of Michigan, and current landowners.
The funds can be used for lawful purposes such as land acquisition, economic development, governmental services, and natural resources protection, but the amendment explicitly prohibits using the money to acquire land for gaming purposes.
