What this amendment would do
SA 6053, submitted by Mr. Padilla, aims to add a section to title II of bill S. 4784. Its purpose is to authorize a demonstration program to show how different wildfire conditions, technologies, and resilience measures affect wildfire spread and response within the built environment.
To achieve this, the amendment proposes the following:
- The Secretary of Defense, working with the Director of the National Science Foundation, will lead the program.
- The Secretary may build a mock town on a test range and start fires to conduct demonstrations.
- The Secretary and Director will collaborate to design, build, equip, and run a full-scale, representative built-environment test range for controlled wildfire experiments.
- The Secretary must share all program data and findings with the public, unless the Secretary decides an exception is needed for national security.
