What this amendment would do
This amendment, submitted by Mr. Padilla, aims to expand the Joshua Tree National Park and rename one of its visitor centers.
Key Changes:
- Boundary Expansion: It adds approximately 20,149 acres of land to the park, as shown on a June 2024 map.
- Jurisdiction Transfer: It moves administrative control of this new land from the Bureau of Land Management to the National Park Service.
- Land Acquisition: It allows the Secretary of the Interior to get land within the park boundaries through donation, purchase from a willing seller, exchange, or transfer. However, land owned by the State of California or its political subdivisions can only be acquired by donation or exchange.
- Visitor Center Renaming: It redesignates the Cottonwood Visitor Center as the Dianne Feinstein Visitor Center.
