What this amendment would do
This amendment, submitted by Mr. Husted, targets the bill S. 4784, which deals with funding and activities for the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy. As folks who want to hold our elected officials accountable and look out for the good of the people, we need to know what our government is checking on behind the scenes. Common sense tells us we have to make sure foreign adversaries are not sneaking around our rules.
What the Amendment Aims to Change or Add
The amendment adds a new section to the bill that requires a specific government review and report. Here is what it aims to add:
- A requirement that the Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security complete a review within 90 days of the Act being enacted.
- An investigation into whether U.S.-domiciled affiliates of covered foreign entities can get items that their restricted parent companies are blocked from getting under U.S. export controls.
- An examination of the national security threats and risks posed by foreign adversaries exploiting vulnerabilities in information and communications technology and services.
- A requirement to list any recommended changes to U.S. law to help address these matters.
- A mandate to submit a report on the results of the review to specific congressional committees no later than 30 days after the review is completed.
