What this amendment would do

SA 5911, submitted by Mr. Sheehy and Mr. Padilla, aims to add a new section to bill S. 4784 regarding the procurement of commercial space-based data to support wildfire resilience.

The purpose of this amendment is to have the Secretary of the Air Force, through the Commercial Space Office and in coordination with the United States Northern Command and the National Guard's FireGuard program, buy commercial space-based data and end products.

This data is intended to support the Department of Defense and the United States Northern Command's wildfire mission to:

  • Protect military installations and readiness.
  • Give emergency military support to civil authorities.
  • Provide military support to Tribal, local, State, and Federal governments.
  • Perform proactive wildland fire management.

Additionally, the amendment allows the Secretary to share this procured data and its end products with Tribal, local, and State governments to help with firefighting efforts.
